The Great Whitby Skim-Off of 2025
Bernard, 71, Whitby
It was a blustery October morning when 40 of us lined up on Whitby beach for the annual skim-off. The wind was against us, the sea was choppy, and somehow my dog had found his way onto the scoring table. Despite all odds, Margaret managed 14 skips with a piece of Yorkshire slate she'd been "saving for a special occasion." Bernard came second with 12, though he insists the wind stole at least 3 more skips from him.
Why I Joined at 82
Doris, 82, Bath
My grandson showed me the website and said "Nan, you'd love this." He was right. I'd been skimming stones since VE Day celebrations when I was a little girl. At 82, I thought my tossing days were behind me. But here I am, three meetups in, with a personal best of 9 skips and more friends than I've had in years. Age is just a number β a high one, in my case.
The Stone That Changed My Life
Graham, 67, Brighton
I was going through a rough patch after retirement. Felt a bit lost, honestly. Then I saw a poster for Old Tossers at the Brighton seafront. I went along thinking I'd just watch, but within five minutes I was knee-deep in pebbles and laughing harder than I had in months. That was two years ago. I've been to 23 meetups since.
Fish, Chips, and 16 Skips
Pat & Alan, 69 & 72, Scarborough
We're a husband-and-wife team. Alan's competitive about everything, so when I beat his skip count he went very quiet for about an hour. Then he bought me fish and chips as a peace offering and we agreed to never discuss the incident again. We're both on 16 now. The rivalry continues.
