Lord Mountbatten was killed by an IRA bomb
A bomb hidden on his boat was detonated as he took it out from Mullaghmore in County Sligo. He was killed along with his grandson Nicholas, a young local crewman, and the Dowager Lady Brabourne. On the same afternoon eighteen British soldiers were killed by two bombs at Warrenpoint in County Down.
It was one of the worst days of the entire Troubles, and it dominated the news in Britain for weeks.
“Which news day from that era has stayed with you the longest?”
