Queen Elizabeth II died at Balmoral
She was ninety-six and had reigned for seventy years and two hundred and fourteen days — longer than any other British monarch. For almost everybody in the country she was the only monarch they had ever known, and a great many people were surprised by how much it got to them.
The queue to see her lying in state at Westminster Hall ran for miles along the South Bank and people stood in it all night, which is possibly the most British thing that has ever happened.
“Where were you when you heard the Queen had died?”
