Diana’s funeral — and a country that went quiet
A million people lined the route in London and something like two and a half billion watched around the world. Elton John rewrote Candle in the Wind and sang it in Westminster Abbey. Earl Spencer gave an address that made the crowd outside applaud, and the sound travelled in through the doors.
The shops shut. The roads emptied. People who had never met her stood in silence on their own street corners.
“What were you doing on the day of the funeral?”
