The Blitz began
Late on a Saturday afternoon, hundreds of German bombers came up the Thames and hit the docks of the East End. The fires could be seen for miles. London was then bombed on fifty-seven consecutive nights, and other cities followed — Coventry, Liverpool, Hull, Glasgow, Plymouth, Belfast.
People slept in Underground stations, in Anderson shelters, in cupboards under the stairs, and then went to work in the morning.
