Germany invaded Poland — and the evacuations began
As the invasion started, Operation Pied Piper began moving children out of British cities. Within days something like a million and a half people, most of them children, had been sent to the countryside with a label tied to their coat and a gas mask in a cardboard box.
Some had the best years of their childhood. Some had the worst. Very few of them ever forgot the platform they left from.
