Residents of Tokyo are experiencing a mild, rainy start to their Wednesday, with temperatures sitting at a comfortable 25ยฐC and light winds of just 5 kilometres per hour.
The rain began falling in the early hours of the morning local time, with around 1.5 millimetres recorded โ enough to dampen the pavements and give the air that fresh, clean smell, but hardly a downpour. For those of us more familiar with British drizzle, that's the sort of rain that might have you reaching for a brolly but wouldn't stop you popping out to the shops.
Pleasant conditions for mid-August
At 25ยฐC, it's what most of us would call lovely summer weather โ warm enough to be pleasant but not sticky or oppressive. The gentle breeze of 5 kilometres per hour is barely enough to rustle the leaves, making it feel rather calm and peaceful despite the rain.
Tokyo, home to nearly 14 million people in the city proper and over 37 million in the greater metropolitan area, is no stranger to rain during August. The city typically sees its wettest months during the summer, though conditions can vary considerably from day to day.
Life goes on as normal
This is very much everyday weather rather than anything dramatic โ the sort of morning where Tokyo commuters will be navigating the famously efficient metro system with their umbrellas, and office workers might be grateful for a slightly cooler start to the day than the sometimes sweltering heat that August can bring to Japan's capital.
The conditions are being monitored by Open-Meteo, which provides weather data from around the world. There's nothing about this weather pattern to cause concern, just one of those ordinary rainy mornings that happen in cities everywhere.
