Magnitude 5.2 earthquake — 42 km ESE of Naalehu, Hawaii

A moderate earthquake has shaken Hawaii's Big Island in the early hours of this morning, with the tremor centred about 42 kilometres east-southeast of Naalehu on the island's southern coast.

The United States Geological Survey recorded the quake at magnitude 5.2, striking at around 3:48 AM local time. The epicentre was located offshore in the Pacific Ocean, roughly 11 kilometres beneath the seabed.

What a magnitude 5.2 feels like

An earthquake of this size is considered moderate and would typically be felt quite noticeably by anyone awake at the time. Indoors, you'd likely feel a strong shaking — enough to rattle dishes, swing hanging objects, and possibly knock items off shelves. Outdoors, the ground movement would be obvious, though structural damage to well-built buildings is generally minor at this magnitude.

For those tucked up in bed when it struck, the shaking would almost certainly have woken them — not the gentlest start to a Wednesday morning.

Hawaii's restless geology

Earthquakes are far from unusual in Hawaii, which sits atop some of the world's most active volcanoes. The Big Island is home to Kilauea and Mauna Loa, and the constant movement of magma beneath the surface, combined with the weight of the volcanic mountains themselves, means the earth is rarely completely still.

This particular quake occurred in an area where such seismic activity is relatively common, though a magnitude 5.2 is certainly enough to get people's attention and remind residents that they live on geologically lively ground.

The USGS continues to monitor the situation, and while the data is still being refined, there have been no immediate reports of significant damage or injuries at this stage. That said, it's still early days, and the full picture may take a little while to emerge.
