Magnitude 2.7 earthquake — 5 km NW of Pinnacles, CA

A small earthquake has given parts of central California a brief shake this morning, though it's unlikely to have caused any damage.

The tremor, measuring magnitude 2.7, struck about 5 kilometres northwest of Pinnacles — that's the area near Pinnacles National Park, known for its dramatic rock formations and condor watching. The US Geological Survey recorded the quake just after midday GMT (early morning California time).

Barely beneath the surface

What makes this one slightly unusual is how shallow it was. The quake originated just half a kilometre below ground — that's roughly 500 metres, or about the height of a modest hill. Earthquakes this close to the surface tend to feel sharper and more jolting to anyone nearby, even when they're small, because there's less rock to absorb the energy before it reaches you.

For context, a magnitude 2.7 earthquake is what seismologists call "minor." People close to the epicentre might have felt a quick jolt or heard a rumbling sound, rather like a heavy lorry passing by. Windows might have rattled briefly. But this is well below the threshold where you'd expect any structural damage — that typically starts around magnitude 4 or 5, depending on building quality and depth.

California's constant fidgeting

California sits atop several major fault lines, including the famous San Andreas Fault, so small earthquakes like this are part of everyday life. No reports of damage or injuries have emerged, which is entirely expected for a quake of this size.
