A small earthquake has given parts of central California a gentle shake this morning, though it's unlikely many people noticed.
What happened
The tremor, measuring magnitude 2.7, struck about 5 kilometres northwest of Pinnacles National Park just after midday GMT (early morning California time). According to the US Geological Survey, the quake hit at an extremely shallow depth of just half a kilometre below the surface.
For those wondering what a 2.7 actually feels like: not much, frankly. Earthquakes of this size are generally only felt by people who happen to be sitting still and paying attention, and even then it's more of a brief rumble than anything alarming. You certainly wouldn't expect any damage from something this modest.
Where it struck
Pinnacles National Park sits in the Gabilan Mountains of central California, roughly halfway between Monterey and Fresno. It's a stunning bit of landscape formed by ancient volcanic activity, with dramatic rock formations and talus caves that draw hikers and rock climbers year-round.
The park straddles the San Andreas Fault zone, so the odd tremor is part and parcel of life in that corner of the world. California records thousands of small earthquakes every year — the vast majority too faint to feel.
Nothing to worry about
This particular quake was recorded about an hour ago, and there've been no reports of damage or anyone being troubled by it. Given its size and remote location, that's exactly what you'd expect.
Shallow quakes like this one can sometimes feel a bit stronger right at the surface than deeper ones of the same magnitude, but at 2.7 we're still talking about something you'd barely notice unless you were having a very quiet cup of tea at the time.
