1972 · The Munich Olympics attack
Members of the Israeli Olympic team were taken hostage at the athletes' village by Palestinian gunmen. The rescue attempt at a nearby airfield failed and eleven Israeli team members, a West German policeman and five of the attackers were killed.
The Games were suspended and then resumed. It was the first time an atrocity was carried live into people's living rooms over an entire day, and television news was never quite the same again.
