1666 · The Great Fire of London started in Pudding Lane
It began in a bakery in the early hours and burned for four days, taking most of the medieval City with it — something like thirteen thousand houses and old St Paul's Cathedral. Remarkably few people are recorded as having died.
Samuel Pepys buried his wine and his parmesan cheese in the garden, which is the single most relatable detail in the whole of English history.
