1968 · Warsaw Pact tanks rolled into Czechoslovakia
On the night of the twentieth, troops from the Soviet Union and its allies crossed the border to put an end to the Prague Spring — the brief experiment in “socialism with a human face” under Alexander Dubček. Czechs and Slovaks came out to argue with the tank crews in the street, and there are photographs of young men standing in front of the tracks that went round the world.
It was the year of Paris, Grosvenor Square and Chicago too. Nineteen sixty-eight arrived at nearly everybody's front door in one form or another.
